What is Rolfing™?

Rolfing™, named after its founder Dr. Ida Rolf™, is a unique system of manual manipulation therapy. While it shares some similarities with massage in its hands-on approach, its underlying goals and focus are distinctly different. Traditional massage often targets localized strain and pain in specific muscles that are experiencing immediate issues. In contrast, Rolfing™ delves deeper, focusing on the connective tissue surrounding the muscles, known as fascia. It also meticulously addresses the body’s complex interaction with gravity at the joints, seeking to optimize structural alignment rather than just alleviate superficial tension.

By concentrating on this structural realignment, the overarching goal of Rolfing™ is to create a more integrated and harmonized body. This integration allows for the muscles, tendons, and ligaments to be properly utilized and function efficiently within their natural framework. The result is often a significant alleviation of chronic aches and pains, and importantly, it can help prevent their recurrence. Ultimately, successful Rolfing™ can lead to a tangible increase in an individual's quality of life, fostering overall health, wellness, and a greater sense of physical prosperity.

There is much more to discuss regarding the nuanced pros and cons of Rolfing™ when compared to massage therapy, as well as the fundamental differences between these two distinct styles of bodywork. I can also provide a detailed explanation of what the Rolfing™ process entails and what to expect from each session and the treatment as a whole. It’s important to understand that a complete Rolfing™ treatment typically consists of ten individual, carefully structured sessions, usually performed weekly. Each of these sessions has specific territorial goals and focuses on particular regions of the body. This is crucial to note: Rolfing™ is NOT a full-body, once-over treatment; it is a methodical, cumulative process. These sessions are performed sequentially and purposefully, meticulously following a refined "recipe" for Rolfing™ that has been fine-tuned over more than 60 years of practice and development.
